August Dining Out: Latino Japanese
On Thursday, August 21, we will be dining at a very unique restaurant in the west end. Mai Bistro offers a fascinating selection of Japanese dishes with South American influences. Most of the dishes are in the form of small or large tapas, so they are ideal for sharing. There are also a number of vegetarian options available. Prices are very reasonable considering the reputation of the head chef (see below).
Chef's profile from Mai Bistro's website:
Classically trained Japanese chef Manh Nguyen has worked with some of the best Japanese chefs in the city. He was the Sous Chef for the Intercontinental Hotel in Caracas, Venezuela. During his time living in South America and using this experience, he developed a new style of Asian and Latino cooking. Upon returning to Toronto, he began working at the Supermarket restaurant with a new menu focusing on family style dining and a tapas style sharing menu that has gained great reviews from customers. In 2005 he was named one of the “Top 10 New Chefs” in the city.
You can view the menu and more info about the restaurant here:
Our reservation is for 6:30, so please try to arrive on time.
This event is limited to 16 members and their guests. Please register before Tuesday, August 19 at midnight. Because these events are very popular, there is always a wait list, so please remember to cancel if you cannot make it. If you don't know how to cancel, please send a message to the email address below. Note that if you register and then not attend, and you do not cancel at least 24 hours before the event, you will be moved to the wait list for the next dinner you register for.

The outbound route climbs the Niagara Escarpment from Stoney Creek and then goes along the ridge, mostly on Ridge Road. Then it's Ball's Falls, Effingham Hill, following the Welland River and finally entering Niagara Falls from the south. This leg follows the Niagara Parkway northwards to Queen Street. At Queen St switch over to the return route. (Perhaps after a side trip to Taps Brewhouse). Route on RideWithGPS: Burlington to Niagara Falls
The return route from Niagara Falls continues from Queen St on the Niagara Parkway heading northward to Niagara-on-the-Lake, then westward skirting Lake Ontario. Route on RideWithGPS: Niagara Falls to Burlington
The full route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/40610689. Load the full route into your Garmin or RWGPS app to get the entire ride into one Strava file. However, if your device tends to get confused when the out and back routes overlap, it may be better to load the outbound and return routes separately.
If interested, Taps Brewhouse is on Queen St, 0.8 km west of the point where the outbound route ends and the return route begins.
Sunset will be at 8:02 pm. If there is any chance you will still be riding after 7:30 pm, you must have lights, front and rear.
The return leg is routed on the Hamilton Beach Trail. This is a pleasant alternative to the usual Hairshirt route which only follows roads - HOWEVER you will need to slow down because of people and pets on the Trail.
Taking the GO train back to Burlington. What if you need to exit the ride at the half-way point? The Niagara Falls train station, at Bridge St and Erie Ave, is only 6 blocks from Taps Brewhouse. Click here for the Updated GO Schedule. There are Presto pay stations on the platform, or tickets can be purchased in the station. If you use Presto, be sure to tap off at Burlington, or you will be charged for the distance to Toronto.
NOTE: Car parking may be limited in Etienne Brule park, but additional space is usually available across the river in Kingsmill Park (0.5km away).

There is a washroom break, but the coffee shop in the college is NOT open, So please bring a snack if needed. The return route is slightly different and uses part of the East Humber river trail. This event is inspired by a Country Cruise favourite, the ABC Tour - Alliston, Borden, Creemore. We don't start in Alliston, so no A - but the C is in all routes and the B is an option. The two longer routes have a scenic and hilly loop through Glen Huron; and the 82 and 103k include Base Borden. All rides have lunch in Creemore to enjoy the Copper Kettle Festival.
Location: Tosorontio Central Public School - 7016 County Rd 13, Everett, ON L0M 1J0.
Driving directions, click here. (On the way, there is a Tim Hortons at the gas station at Hwy 50 and Hwy 89).
Routes: 65, 79, 82, 88, and 103 km Link: creemore-copper-kettle-festival. Choose your loops: The 103k contains all three loops. The 82 leaves out the Glen Huron loop. The 65, 79, and 88 leave out the Base Borden loop. The 65 has just the New Lowell loop.

Click the Register button on this page to register for the ride.
Three route lengths (69km, 83 km and 102 km) are available. The two longer routes stop at Mercato Italian Bakery in Bolton for an optional lunch stop. The short route stops at Pine Farms Orchard on 16th Sideroad for lunch.
The beginning and end portions of the three rides are the same. The longer rides are essentially "loops" off the shorter rides. This means riders can choose during the ride whether to do the long, medium or short distance. This means you should also bring cue sheets for all routes you think you might ride. Likewise, for GPS units, you should download all routes you think you might ride.
Please note that the medium route has changed. After turning left onto Albion-Vaughan (from King Road) you go over the Humber River and then immediately turn right onto Old King Road. After about 300 metres you turn left onto the first street (unmarked) and then continue onto a paved trail, past two gates, and at the top of a steep climb you continue on Nunnville. This change avoids the climb on the busy Albion-Vaughan road.
Meet at Finch Subway Station, "Finch" west parking lot on the north side of Hendon Ave, just west of Yonge St.
N.B. If you are travelling north on Yonge St, keep going past Finch Ave and turn left onto Hendon Ave. The parking lot is on the right near 18 Hendon Ave, North York.
Ride leader: Sam Bootsma
Distance: 69km or 83km or 102km
PLEASE PRINT THE CUE SHEETS & MAPS, OR DOWNLOAD THE GPS FILES BEFORE ATTENDING THE RIDE. (The ride leader does not provide maps or cue sheets).
Helmets are required.
Ride may be cancelled up to 2 hours before the start of the ride if significant rain is forecast with moderate or higher likelihood for any time during the ride. Ride could be cancelled if weather is not suitable due to rain, snow, too cold, or salt on roads and/or trails.
