Glen Major Forest/Brock Tract Loop
The Glen Major Forest is more than 3700 acres of land located on the Oak Ridges Moraine in the headwaters of the Duffins Creek Watershed. This area consists of mixed coniferous/ deciduous forests and a gravel pit once operated in the Glen Major site and is currently being restored. The remainder of the property complex was previously used for agriculture and contains a variety of habitat including forest, meadows and wetlands. Old farm roads and farm building foundations are still visible. This hike has lots of elevation changes and I think that most hikers will find the forest quite beautiful but strenuous. It is a hike worth doing.

January Pub Quiz
You are invited to attend the monthly trivia night at The Prenup Pub on Tuesday, January 28. Please register before Sunday, January 26 at midnight.
The Prenup Pub is one of the best pubs in the city. It’s a Belgian style pub with a wonderful atmosphere, great food, and extraordinary draft beer, all at reasonable prices. In fact, the atmosphere is actually free! The draft beer list consists of 70 quality brews, of which most are European. There is also a sizeable wine list. The food menu is also extensive and also mostly European, with French, Belgian, Italian and German specialties. There are also quite a few vegetarian and vegan dishes.
The schedule for the evening is as follows:
This will be an unusual pub quiz in that the participants will choose the categories before the quiz begins. Virtually any category is possible, including history, geography, 80s music, Soviet fashion, marine biology, supramolecular chemistry, and even cycling. The teams or four or five will brainstorm possible categories, and we all vote to determine the five most popular topics. Then, since each team will be responsible for one round of questions, they will work together to compose 8-10 questions in their assigned category. Phones are permitted only during this phase and during the break.
The Prenup Pub is conveniently located at 191 College Street, just a five-minute walk west of Queen’s Park subway station. There also is street parking available, especially on McCaul Street. We will be on ground floor of the pub, on your right as you walk in (next to the bar). View the map here.

Summary:
To see if this trip is for you, I recommend you read Michael Nyby's article about his route and his trip along it with photographs on Bikepacking Ontario at the link below. Base on his article I advise that you should use a mountain bike (min 2" tires) or gravel bike (min 43mm tires), and like riding unpaved trails, and at least 125kms in a day. You can and should pack light as we will be staying at a hotel and there are places to eat and drink along the route.

Easily accessible via public transit from Toronto, this overnight loop is a great way for riders in the GTA to get away for the weekend…if they like riding gravel and trails. Utilizing the extensive trail networks through the York and Durham regions, the course winds its way through 240 kilometres of Ontario countryside. You'll ride a variety of hiking trail, horse trail, rail trail, mountain bike singletrack, and a variety of back roads. Each day is technically challenging with a number of steep off-road sections, so about two-inch (50mm) width tires are recommended.
Itinerary: Day 1 Pickering Lake Ontario to Jackson’s Point Lake Simcoe:
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/49479901
Distance 125 km. Elevation 768 m. Unpaved 69%.
7:30am The ride starts at the Pickering GO Station, so riders can easily take transit from Toronto to the start (and end) of the trip.
Day one front loads all of the technical trail sections, as you'll link up the Duffins Trail, Greenwood Conservation Area, Claremont Nature Centre, and Durham Forest with just a few kilometres of road in between.
65.7 km: Uxbridge: Lunch at The Bar Cafe.
The second half of the day consists of about 30 kilometres of continuous rail trail and 25 km on a mix of gravel and paved country roads as you make your way to Sibbald Point.

https://ridewithgps.com/routes/49479996
Distance 112 km. Elevation 658 m. Unpaved 51%.
Free Breakfast at Ramada.
Day two starts with a leisurely spin along the shores of Lake Simcoe followed by a rip through some of Sutton's ATV trails. These trails turn into a literal swamp if it's been wet, so we only recommend riding through this section if you're going in the late summer. About 10 kms into the Zephyr-Sutton Rail Trail, riders have the option of taking a right on Ravenshoe Road to explore the trails of the Brown Hill Tract, or continue straight down the Rail Trail to its terminus just north of the lunch stop in Mount Albert.
35.5 km: Mount Albert: Morning snack at Lighthouse Cafe.
After Mount Albert the route links up a number of tracts in the York Regional Forest system. Trails through here range from smooth crushed-gravel dualtrack to sandy horse trails to rutted out technical mountain-bike oriented singletrack. There are plenty of optional loops to explore,
63 km: Ballantrae. Lunch at Nonno Crupi's Pizza.
Save your energy because you'll still have to tackle some tough climbs through the meadows around Musselman Lake and the route ends with a rip down the challenging but extremely rewarding Seaton Hiking Trail.
75 km: Shoppers Drug Mart; Pizza Hut.
112 km: Trains from Pickering GO back into Toronto run every half hour so you might even make it home for dinner.
A ride starting in Inglewood, just off of Hwy 10. We begin riding toward Caledon East on the Caledon Trailway and cross Hwy 10 on the pedestrian bridge over the highway. Then a bit of escarpment country and a short stretch of gravel on Escarpment Sideroad as we head west, skirting past Belfountain on the way to lunch at the Tin Roof Cafe in Erin. Dipping southwards, we pass through Cheltenham, then take Boston Mills Rd back to Inglewood.
Start location: Lloyd Wilson Centennial Arena in Inglewood. If this parking lot is full, consider parking at the library at the top of the hill.

This weekend is a chance to get the 2025 cycling season off to a great start by joining one of TBN’s most popular rides along the quiet roads and off-road paved trails of the Niagara Region. This year we have 34 spots - note that this trip sold out quickly in previous years.
Note that as these are no-drop rides, all riders are expected to be able to maintain a comfortable pace of 18 kms per hour or higher. You are also expected to ride with a spare inner tube in the event of a flat and also to be able to change your tire.
Accommodations
We’ll once again stay at the comfortable Niagara College residence near Niagara-on-the-Lake. You’ll have your own bedroom in a shared suite, complete with a shared full bathroom and shared kitchenette, including a refrigerator. Note a change in room furnishings from previous years. In each suite, one bedroom has a double bed, desk with chair and satellite TV. The second bedroom has two single loft over desk/bunk style beds.
There is a Tim Hortons and McDonald's in the large outlet mall, just a three-minute drive or ride away. For people looking to keep costs down, consider bringing your own supplies for breakfasts.
Note that given the shared bathroom and common area, attendees will be invited to select the other TBN member with whom they would like to share the suite.
Friday May 16 Warmup Ride
For those who can get away early, as in past years on Friday afternoon at 2 pm we will once again start with an optional warmup ride along the bike path from Niagara on the Lake to Niagara Falls and back, covering about 50 kms.
Friday’s ride will be followed by a group supper on the patio at Play Bar & Grille at the White Oaks Resort, which is located nearby. Alternatively you are welcome to organize informal group dinners at restaurants in the area.
Saturday May 17
Saturday’s rides feature long and short distances and run along the little-known paved off-road trail beside the Welland Canal, with a stop for lunch along the way.
After their ride, participants are invited to meet for an informal get together and beer at the Niagara College Teaching Brewery, located next the location where we are staying. Each participant will receive a $15 gift card for the beverage of your choice and there will also be snacks courtesy of TBN. Alternatively, participants can visit Niagara on the Lake or do a winetasting at one of the nearby wineries.
This will be followed by pizza, salad and dessert in the patio area outside the Niagara College dining room. Pizza and soft drinks will be supplied. In addition, we’ll be asking people to bring a salad or dessert. Please bring your own main course if you don’t like pizza, as well as anything stronger than pop to drink.
Something else to bear in mind is that in past years some members followed this by a drive to Niagara Falls to watch the fireworks over the gorge.
Sunday May 18
Sunday’s rides (again, long and short) begin from a remote start 15 minutes away in Niagara Falls along the paved trail beside the Niagara River Parkway – with a stop for lunch enroute.
For anyone interested, we’ll again be convening at the Niagara College Teaching Brewery after we get back.
Sunday evening will feature group suppers at local restaurants, with a variety of cuisines and price points to choose from. Last year these dinners were very popular.
Monday May 19
Monday is your chance to join a final short early morning ride, do some hiking along the Bruce Trail, visit the Outlet Mall nearby or tour some wineries. To beat long weekend traffic, most riders head home by noon.
For anyone wanting to come out a day early or to extend your stay, contact Niagara College directly to make a reservation, mentioning that you are part of the TBN group staying from Friday to Sunday nights.
Overall logistics:
This ride is limited to members of TBN.
To specify the person who will be sharing your room, once you’ve both registered send an email to dan.richards@rotman.utoronto.ca
An attempt will be made to match anyone who needs a ride with those able to offer a ride. The suggested compensation for members providing a ride is $25 in each direction.
Your fee of $295 per person gives you
access to trip planning and maps
pizza and pop for the Saturday evening potluck
a $15 gift card for Niagara Brewery with snacks on Saturday afternoon
three nights’ accommodation on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (includes your own bedroom, towels, sheets, blankets). All meals except for the Saturday potluck are extra.
Should you need to cancel, provided that your room can be filled from members on the waiting list you will receive a refund less a $50 cancellation fee.

It's a very beautiful ride with no cars (except near towns). Lakeridge Ski area is very beautiful, there is bit of hard packed gravel section 3km that cannot be avoided (I tried, and that was most unpleasant experience with narrow shoulders with cars traveling 80k+)
