               HAPPY NEW YEAR

Due to the popular demand (and because there is nothing else to do) we are going to continue with Winter Hiking

In response to the enhanced Provincial lockdown we are going to do things a little differently.  There will continue to be 3 hikes of 10 people including a hike leader but instead of allowing 30 people to register at once and then splitting them up at the start of the hike we will list each hike separately and each will have its own hike leader and starting time.  We are going to start the hikes a little earlier (at 9.30 am) this session and space the remaining hikes 20 minutes apart.  This should allow us to have the first group clear the parking lot before the second group meets etc.  This may also put pressure on hikes that have limited parking.  The last group in may have parking challenges.  We will have to see how this works.  This also means that if you sign up for the 9.30 hike and are delayed for whatever reason you will not necessarily be allowed to join the next hike going out at 9.50 am.  This will be allowed only if there is room and at the discretion of the hike leader.  If you want to change the starting time of your hike you will need to unregister from the time you originally agreed to go and re register at the new time. If you are on the waiting list for one of the 3 hikes it does not guarantee you a spot on any of the remaining 2 hikes.  If you are undecided about the time you want please do not register for all the times thinking you can cancel after you decide.  Because there are a limited number of spots if we find someone has registered for more than one time slot they will be not be allowed to hike with us that day.

Lets see how this works

THE SEATON TRAIL

THE SEATON TRAIL IS LOCATED ALONG THE WEST DUFFINS CREEK IN PICKERING.  THE TRAIL GOT ITS NAME FROM THE PLANNED COMMUNITY OF SEATON WHICH WAS ENVISIONED IN THE 1970'S TO ACCOMPANY THE AIRPORT PLANNED IN THE AREA.  THE TRAIL FOLLOWS HISTORIC HUNTING AND FISHING ROUTES ALONG THE CREEK USED FOR CENTURIES BY ABORIGINAL PEOPLE.  IN PIONEER TIMES THE CREEK AND VALLEY BECAME THE SITE OF SEVERAL WATER POWERED MILLS.  A FORMER GRIST MILL STILL EXISTS AT WHITEVALE.

Distance:  11 km

Pace:       Moderate (~3.5 km/hr)

Terrain:     Moderate - rocky with hills and/or poor footing.   Depending on the weather poles or icers may be needed.  PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT FALL HIKING IS DIFFERENT THAN WINTER HIKING AND YOU NEED TO PREPARE ACCORDINGLY
