A ride to watch the salmon run on the Ganaraska River.
People go to Port Hope every weekend from mid-August to early October to watch the 5,000 to 10,000 chinook and silvery coho salmon swim from Lake Ontario up the Ganaraska River that runs through Port Hope on their way to their home spawning grounds. The two cycling routes (below) are based on the Newcastle Navigator Country Cruise which leave from Newcastle and head north-east to Port Hope for lunch. Each route has four optional stops to watch the Salmon Run (see cue sheets for details) before getting to Port Hope. After lunch, all routes are the same returning to Newcastle along the Lake Ontario shoreline. Lunch for all routes will be at Memorial Park Bandshell on Augusta St in Port Hope. Bring your own lunch or grab food at any of the locations on Walton, John or Queen streets.
