October Pub Quiz
You are invited to attend the monthly trivia night at The Prenup Pub on Tuesday, October 28. Please register before Monday, October 27 at 10 pm.
The Prenup Pub is one of the best pubs in the city. It’s a Belgian style pub with a wonderful atmosphere, great food, and extraordinary draft beer, all at reasonable prices. In fact, the atmosphere is actually free! The draft beer list consists of 70 quality brews, of which most are European. There is also a sizeable wine list. The food menu is also extensive and also mostly European, with French, Belgian, Italian and German specialties. There are also quite a few vegetarian and vegan dishes.
The schedule for the evening is as follows:
This will be an unusual pub quiz in that the participants will choose the categories before the quiz begins. Virtually any category is possible, including history, geography, 80s music, Soviet fashion, marine biology, supramolecular chemistry, and even cycling. The teams or four or five will brainstorm possible categories, and we all vote to determine the five most popular topics. Then, since each team will be responsible for one round of questions, they will work together to compose 8-10 questions in their assigned category. Phones are permitted only during this phase and during the break.
The Prenup Pub is conveniently located at 191 College Street, just a five-minute walk west of Queen’s Park subway station. There also is street parking available, especially on McCaul Street. We will be on ground floor of the pub, on your right as you walk in (next to the bar) or on the patio. View the map here.
Questions or concerns please contact Ken Lackman, Social Director at social@tbn.ca.
HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!
This will run slightly longer than an hour. We will complete one lap.
Duration: 75 min Distance: 27.9 km Elevation: 95m
Route: Watopia's Waistband
Please note ride starts at 10:00AM!
Sadly it is getting to the end of the season and what better way to wind it down than a ride from Victoria Square to Annina's. The butter tarts and pastries will still taste good and hopefully there will be no wasps on their patio.
A good time will be had by all.

We will be doing a City Walk in memory of our friend and long time TBN member Irene Solom. Non-members such as Irene's friends, relatives, co-workers, and others are invited to join us.
We will meet at 10:00 AM at Christie Subway Station, at ground level, in front of the ticket booth area. The route will be a version of the "Weird Yards" walk we first did in 2015, which Irene helped to plan. We will be offering two distance options, a 7.7 Km (4.8 mi) route for experienced walkers, and a 3.0 Km (1.9 mi) route for those preferring a shorter distance. Both the longer and shorter walks will start and end at Christie Subway Station.
After the walk we will meet for lunch at a restaurant on the Danforth, a 17 minute subway ride from Christie station. We have made a reservation, but depending on the number of Irene's friends, relatives, and co-workers going for lunch, there may not be room for all the TBN walkers who would like to attend. Once we determine how many spaces are available for TBN members, we will provide updated information. (If there are TBN members who are unable to join us for lunch, I may run another walk in memory of Irene in the 2026 Winter/Spring season, just for TBN members).
Please register for the walk below (same registration for either distance). You do not have to indicate in advance which distance you intend to walk, and you can decide at 1.5 Km which route to take. Each walk participant should register individually.

Glen Major Forest/Brock Tract Loop
The Glen Major Forest is more than 3700 acres of land located on the Oak Ridges Moraine in the headwaters of the Duffins Creek Watershed. This area consists of mixed coniferous/ deciduous forests and a gravel pit once operated in the Glen Major site and is currently being restored. The remainder of the property complex was previously used for agriculture and contains a variety of habitat including forest, meadows and wetlands. Old farm roads and farm building foundations are still visible. This hike has lots of elevation changes and I think that most hikers will find the forest quite beautiful but strenuous. It is a hike worth doing.
Distance: 13 km
Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/38184572
Pace: Moderate (~3.5 km/hr)
Terrain: Moderate - rocky with hills and/or poor footing.
Directions: https://www.google.ca/maps/place/Brock+Tract/@44.0027418,-79.128982,15z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x89d525dd7de51f9d:0xa55b051d89412d81!8m2!3d43.9998587!4d-79.1280305
This is a smaller free parking lot that may be difficult to see from Brock Road. It looks like a farmers lane so be on the lookout for it. We are using this because the lot we usually use now has pay parking.
Parking is at a premium so please do not be late and find yourself scrambling for a parking spot.

This year we will the same buffet dinner as last year, but in a larger room. Entertainment will be provided by the Junctioneers, the band that played at the last two Spring Flings. This three-piece partially-acoustic band will get people dancing but not be too loud to inhibit conversation. Be there at 5:30 for drinks and to mingle with other members and their guests. This is also an excellent opportunity to recognize the efforts of those on the TBN Board as well as all of our volunteers who have assisted in making this such a successful year.

Meet at about 10:00 AM EST in front of Broadview subway station. We will begin the walk at 10:10 sharp. Patsy will be leading the walk today.
We will walk in a loop of approximately 10 Km and return to the start. We will see Chester Hill Lookout, Todmorden Mills, Evergreen Brickworks, Chorley Park, Integral House, and Riverdale Farm. The route will be on city streets, so please wear shoes or boots appropriate for the weather.
There are three parking lots within about 500m of the start of the walk, but all seem to have fairly high Sunday rates. There may be street parking available on nearby side streets, but the best choice may be to use the subway.
There are no washrooms at the start/finish, but there is a public washroom in the Bloor Station, which may be convenient for some who are using the subway to get to or from the walk. Also, there is a washroom at Withrow Park, about 1.2 Km from the start/finish.
When this entry was last updated, there were no scheduled subway outages, but please check https://www.ttc.ca/service-advisories/subway-service#e=0 in case there are any changes.

Smokey Hollow Falls is the majestic center point of a group of trails with plenty of variety and changes of elevation. It is not too difficult and is just the hike for early in the TBN Fall Hiking season. Sadly a lot of the leaves have already fallen from the trees but it is still beautiful and of course we have the Falls. It may be busy at the Falls especially if it is a nice day but we will be spending most of our time on the Bruce Trail so the crowds should not be too bad.

Great Waterfront Trail Adventure 2025
“8 Days, 3 Great Lakes, So Many Memories”
Every August, cyclists from across Ontario (and beyond) gather to enjoy one of the province’s most scenic cycling tours: The Great Waterfront Trail Adventure (GWTA).
The 2025 edition featured eight days of lakeside riding, cultural stops, finishing back in Hamilton after more than 600 km in the saddle, offering the chance to dip their wheels in three of Ontario’s Great Lakes: Lake Ontario, Huron, and Erie.
Location: 40 Orchard View Boulevard - main floor meeting room (view map here) Day: Monday, November 17 Time: 7 pm to 8 pm Apres-Pres: Duke of Kent Pub, 2315 Yonge St.
Day: Monday, November 17
Meet at about 10:00 AM in the Great Hall of Union Station (the train station, not the subway station). We usually are near the benches around the north-west corner of the hall but may be somewhere else nearby if there is construction work, etc. Just look for a group of people standing around. We will begin the walk at 10:10 sharp.
From Union Station we will walk west along the Waterfront trail, then head north towards Garrison Common, and see the new bridge that was built over the tracks a couple of years ago. From there, we will head east on quiet streets and we will stop for lunch at the Salad King at McCaul and Queen. The total distance is approximately 8.2 Km. Osgoode station is very close to the restaurant at University and Queen.
There are washrooms at Union Station, Coronation Park, and Alexandra Park (skating rink) where we can make a detour and walk up Ryerson Ave. to the park.
When this entry was last updated there were no scheduled subway outages, but please check https://www.ttc.ca/service-advisories/subway-service#e=0 in case there are any changes.
The route is available on Ride with GPS at https://ridewithgps.com/routes/41682990.
This is our longest walk of the year, but there are many early drop-out points. For the ninth time, David G. will lead us on a walk from St Clair Station (Yonge Line) through the Vale of Avoca, to the Brickworks, up Moore Park Ravine, through Mount Pleasant Cemetery, along the Belt Line, through Cedarvale and Nordheimer Ravines, and down the Casa Loma stairs to Dupont Subway station. Light hiking shoes or boots, suitable for gravel multi-use paths would be appropriate.
Meet at 10 AM at St Clair Subway Station (Yonge Line), at the exit on the south side of St Clair East, at street level. (This is just east of the south-east corner of Yonge & St. Clair). Total distance to Dupont Station is approximately 16 Km, but there are alternate drop out points with access to transit. Break points and early exit points at:
Several bathroom breaks are planned, as well as one coffee stop. At the end we may go to Govinda's (on Avenue Rd), The Quail: A Firkin Pub (on Yonge), or perhaps another restaurant or pub.
The route is available on Ride with GPS at: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/44969354.
When this entry was last updated there were no scheduled subway closures for this date, but please check https://www.ttc.ca/service-advisories/subway-service#e=0 for any changes.
FALL/WINTER HIKING
The Forks of the Credit is a part of the Bruce Trail and also the Niagara Escarpment Biosphere. The hike starts at the junction of Mississauga Road and the Elora Cataract Rail Trail. There had been a mill in the Cataract area since 1820 and in 1885 John Deagle bought the mill and converted it into a hydro generating station which was later purchased by Ontario Hydro and eventually shut down in 1947. The area was also the source of Credit Valley sandstone which was used in the construction of various large buildings like Queen's Park and the Old City Hall. This area is predominantly used by hikers and mountain bikers and there are lots of elevation changes and intersecting trails. It can be a challenging area in the winter so icers are required and hiking poles are recommended
Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/38153913
Terrain: Moderate - rocky with hills and/or poor footing. Depending on the weather poles or icers will be needed.
Directions: https://www.google.ca/maps/place/Mississauga+Rd+%2526+Elora-Cataract+Trailway,+Caledon,+ON+L7K+1M9/@43.819616,-80.0406903,15z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x882b061fcbcc47ed:0xa013b1ea841ca63d!8m2!3d43.8131338!4d-80.0286332
There should be adequate parking at the start of this hike but that does not mean that you should arrive at the last moment. Please plan accordingly.
Julie will be leading us on a City Walk on this date. The start location, route and other information will be available shortly. T
We will meet at 10:00 AM at a location to be determined.
THE WALKER WOODS DOUBLE LOOP
The Walker Woods hike takes place on the Oak Ridges Moraine which was formed when a glacier retreated 10,000 to 12,000 years ago leaving behind a massive ridge. This multi-use trail network provides users with a great variety of loop alternatives with significant natural heritage features and breathtaking vistas. This is not a difficult trail but proper footwear is strongly recommended
Distance: 11 km
Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/35023145
Terrain: Moderate - rocky with hills and/or poor footing. Proper footwear is strongly recommended. Please make sure that you are capable physically of doing this hike.

We will walk about 8 km in one big loop, returning to the St. Clair West Subway Station. The planned route is all on city streets and includes walking up a set of fairly steep steps called the Baldwin Steps, which we will climb slowly but surely. There are 110 steps.
There may be parking lots close to the subway station, or there may be street parking available on nearby side streets. But the best choice would be to use the subway.
The route is available on Ride with GPS at https://ridewithgps.com/routes/41655578.
Meet at about 10:00 AM at Victoria Park Station, in front of the station, on east side of Victoria Park Avenue. We will begin the walk at 10:10 sharp.
We will walk in a loop, going about 7.3 Km and returning to the start, with two bathroom stops. At the beginning of the walk, we will visit a new modular subsidized housing unit finished about three years ago on Macy Avenue. Then we will proceed to Warden Woods trail up to St. Clair, then west along St. Clair to the Dawes Road Cemetery. We will then south go through the cemetery and take side streets to Pharmacy and Victoria Park. From Victoria Park we take a trail down to the Don River and then east back to Victoria Park station.
The route will be entirely on city streets or paved paths, so please wear shoes or boots appropriate for the weather.

We will meet at about 10:00 AM and the walk will begin at 10:10 AM.

The walk will end a restaurant or pub, the optional dinner stop. (Note there may be limited seating space and there may not be room for everyone).

The hike starts in the Speyside Woods heading north over rocky undulating terrain to the Limehouse Conservation area. The trail cuts through the Escarpment cliffs in an area know as "Hole in the Wall" There are ladders to climb down the Escarpment rock through fissures and crevices providing a glimpse into the area's geological past. There are also several stiles to climb over. The trail also passes the remains of limestone kilns which produced the lime used as a binder in mortar and was used in the building of Toronto.

Jokers Hill is a property managed as a research area by the University of Toronto and that coupled with the trails at Thornton Bales Conservation area make it a great place to go hiking. There are lots of elevation changes which make the trails both interesting and challenging and it is relatively close to the city although as with most other places parking can be a challenge.

Building layout:
MEETING LOCATION: , near the ride start. Ambassadors are to collect their T-shirts and Marshalls collect Armbands. Please return Armbands to the organizer as soon as the ride is completed. If the organizer is not present, please leave the Armbands on the table and this is important since Brain Health will need the Armbands for next year, 2026.
FREE VOLUNTEER BUFFET LUNCH PROVIDED BY BAYCREST . This area will be clearly marked at the volunteer check-in location.
Ride Ambassadors: Ambassadors are the eyes and ears of the routes. Ambassadors will be provided the following: T-shirts, a Central Control number to call for cyclists in need. Also, important issues about the routes that event organizers from Baycrest should have.
Ride Marshalls are a “mobile safe riding team effort” for Baycrest and wearing TBN jerseys, plus supplied armbands. Marshalls work in teams of two and basically look for cyclists who are riding unsafely. When Marshalls see this happening they should ride up alongside the cyclist and politely ask them to stop riding in an unsafe manner (most do not realize they are doing it) and ask the person to stop any unsafe activity which could be riding too fast, swerving ahead or behind other riders or texting.
Once a marshall has made the first warning it is best to fall back a bit and observe that the individual is cooperating and if not, the individual must be told that if this type of behaviour continues the next call will be to Toronto Police Services who will then pull the person off the course or wait at the finish line. This rarely is required but it can be a very effective tool.
If the warnings are not observed, marshalls are asked to call Central Control and provide a clear detailed description of the individual as best they can. Central Control will take it from there.

Rules of the Road
For Your Safety we have developed the following safety rules and recommendations. Please read them carefully before event day. City of Toronto Police and Toronto Bicycling Network Ride Marshalls will monitor the roads to ensure they are obeyed.
1) Wearing a bike helmet while riding your bike can reduce the risk of head injury by 85%. Helmets are mandatory for all participants.
2) Be aware of other cyclists, road obstacles and lane markings. Slower cyclists and children must stay to the right of the road. Do not attempt to pass the pace vehicles at any time during the event.
3) Communicate your intentions to other cyclists by telling people you are planning to pass using phrases like “on your left”, “on your right” or “coming through the middle”
4) Cyclists who are deemed by event organizers and Toronto Police to be riding in an unsafe manner will be intercepted and removed from the ride route immediately. This includes weaving in and out of other cyclists, passing other cyclists at high speeds and riding in the midst of other cyclists in a group at high speeds. Please use common sense and ride your bike responsibly and safely.
5) Watch carefully for your 75km route direction signs on the Bayview ramp, and on the Gardiner Expressway on the return ride, to ensure that you ride the full 75km route.
6) Use extreme caution on the downhill portions of the DVP & Gardiner Expressway. Stopping anywhere other than Rest Stations is allowed for EMERGENCY SITUATIONS only. If you have to stop for safety reasons, if possible, let the people around you know you are planning to stop and go to the far right of the road.
7) Be courteous to your fellow participants and remember, by participating in the event and raising funds you are assisting in the defeat of dementia. The Baycrest Foundation thanks you!
8) At all times OBEY the official Toronto Bicycling Network Ride Marshalls and Ambassadors of the Road. They are there for YOUR safety and to ensure the safety of fellow participants.
Thank-you and have a safe and fun ride!
