May Pub Quiz
You are invited to attend the monthly trivia night at Arisu Authentic Korean and Japanese Restaurant on Tuesday, May 26. Please register before Monday, May 25 at 6 pm.
Unfortunately, the Prenup Pub has closed down to make way for apartments. Fortunately, we have been able to move the quiz to a great Korean and Japanese restaurant. Arisu has a huge menu with an incredible variety of Japanese/Korean food including Korean BBQ, sushi, and a number of vegan/vegetarian options. It also has an extensive drink list featuring a good selection of wine, spirits, sake and soju. It has a good choice of bottled beers and six craft and Japanese beers on tap, which are available at the 1980s price of $5.99 a pint. View the full menu here.
Arisu also has a wonderful staff and a nice patio, which we may be able to use in the warmer months.
The schedule for the evening is as follows:
This will be an unusual pub quiz in that the participants will choose the categories before the quiz begins. Virtually any category is possible, including history, geography, 80s music, Soviet fashion, marine biology, supramolecular chemistry, and even cycling. The teams or four or five will brainstorm possible categories, and we all vote to determine the five most popular topics. Then, since each team will be responsible for one round of questions, they will work together to compose 8-10 questions in their assigned category. Phones are permitted only during this phase and during the break.
Arisu is conveniently located at 584 Bloor Street West on the corner of Bloor and Markham Street. It's a 30-second walk from Bathurst subway station if you use the Markham Street entrance. There is a large parking lot behind the restaurant.

Do you want to increase your cycling skill level? Be safer and more defensive rider Improve your safety on the road? Increase your confidence about riding on city streets? Whether you are a new or a long-term rider, there is always something to learn, some skills to improve, and, admit it, some bad habits to unlearn. Perhaps you are a TBN ride leader, but you are uncertain about what skills / behaviours to demonstrate and encourage as you lead your ride.
CAN-BIKE provides structured classes to help you with all this and more! CAN-BIKE provides a Canada-wide skills curriculum as defined by Cycling Canada, and is recommended by provincial governments and many Canadian cities.
Our CAN-BIKE classes are open to all TBN members.
When you register for this theory class, you will receive an email detailing how to complete an additional required online prerequisite education session. This will take you approximately 45 minutes. Please complete this ONE WEEK before the Friday session. If you fail to complete by this time you may be removed from the event.
We are not limiting attendance for the Friday Evening Theory Class. The Theory Class will cover the guiding principles of safe cycling: See, Be Seen, Be Predictable. Those principles then tie into the main CAN-BIKE mantra Maneuverability, Visibility, Predictability, and Communication (MVPC). The Theory Class also cover urban riding, rural riding, group riding, cold weather riding, warm weather riding, nighttime riding, human kinesiology/energy systems, and navigating.
Note: In order to complete either Level 3 or Level 4, students must also register and complete the complementing practical session. See https://www.tbn.ca/event-6647090 for that event on Sat May 30 and Sun May 31.

Safety Marshals are a “mobile safe riding team effort” for Baycrest. You will be given a T-shirt to wear over your cycling clothing. Safety Marshals work in teams of two and basically look for cyclists who are riding unsafely. When Marshals see this happening they should ride up alongside the cyclist and politely ask them to stop riding in an unsafe manner (most do not realize they are doing it) and ask the person to stop any unsafe activity which could be riding too fast, swerving ahead or behind other riders or texting.
Once a Safety marshal has made the first warning it is best to fall back a bit and observe that the individual is cooperating and if not, the individual must be told that if this type of behavior continues the next call will be to Toronto Police Services who will then pull the person off the course or wait at the finish line. This rarely is required but it can be a very effective tool.
If the warnings are not observed, marshals are asked to call Central Control and provide a clear detailed description of the individual as best they can. Central Control will take it from there.

Rules of the Road
For Your Safety we have developed the following safety rules and recommendations. Please read them carefully before event day. City of Toronto Police and Toronto Bicycling Network Ride Marshals will monitor the roads to ensure they are obeyed.
1) Wearing a bike helmet while riding your bike can reduce the risk of head injury by 85%. Helmets are mandatory for all participants.
2) Be aware of other cyclists, road obstacles and lane markings. Slower cyclists and children must stay to the right of the road. Do not attempt to pass the pace vehicles at any time during the event.
3) Communicate your intentions to other cyclists by telling people you are planning to pass using phrases like “on your left”, “on your right” or “coming through the middle”
4) Cyclists who are deemed by event organizers and Toronto Police to be riding in an unsafe manner will be intercepted and removed from the ride route immediately. This includes weaving in and out of other cyclists, passing other cyclists at high speeds and riding in the midst of other cyclists in a group at high speeds. Please use common sense and ride your bike responsibly and safely.
5) Watch carefully for your 75km route direction signs on the Bayview ramp, and on the Gardiner Expressway on the return ride, to ensure that you ride the full 75km route.
6) Use extreme caution on the downhill portions of the DVP & Gardiner Expressway. Stopping anywhere other than Rest Stations is allowed for EMERGENCY SITUATIONS only. If you have to stop for safety reasons, let the people around you know you are planning to stop and go to the far right of the road.
7) Be courteous to your fellow participants and remember, by participating in the event and raising funds you are assisting in the defeat of dementia. The Baycrest Foundation thanks you!
8) At all times OBEY the official Toronto Bicycling Network Ride Marshals and Ambassadors of the Road. They are there for YOUR safety and to ensure the safety of fellow participants.
Thank-you and have a safe and fun ride!

A ride through suburban side streets and country roads to the historic village of Kleinberg with refreshments at Balzac's Coffee Roasters or Cookie and Crumble Cafe across the road (depending on the availability of outdoor seating) before heading back to Finch station.
A 64-km option is available, turning south from King Vaughan Townline onto Kipling Avenue.
Meet north of Finch Subway Station at "Finch" west parking lot on the north side of Hendon Ave, just west of Yonge St. If a substantial part of the Yonge Subway is closed the day of this ride, alternatives for those planning to take the subway are needed: either the shuttle buses (which can carry 2 bikes each), or cycling up. Here is a recommended route, using the sidewalk under Hwy 401 and avoiding Yonge Street north of Hwy 401.
N.B. If you are driving north on Yonge St, keep going past Finch Ave and turn left onto Hendon Ave. The parking lot is on the right near 18 Hendon Ave, North York.

Bring your lunch to enjoy in Orono's lovely community park with picnic tables and washroom facilities. The return trip to Newcastle has some wonderful downhill stretches and passes some great apple orchards.
