Niagara Hike and Bike

Registration will open soon for this exciting adventure in Niagara-on-the-Lake. There are options for biking and hiking, with rides along quiet roads and paved trails. This region is often the warmest part of Ontario, so enjoy a slightly early spring.

Watch the website for details

Contact Janet at weekendtrips@tbn.ca if you have any suggestions for a trip or if you wish to lead one. Trip leaders have their fees paid by TBN.

Last chance to be a Cyclon star

Cyclon, TBN's flagship multi-day cycling event, turns 30 this year, and this is your chance to make it an extra special occasion. Enter the contest for a new Cyclon logo - winner receives a $100 credit towards your Cyclon adventure.

Your winning design should be in postscript, so it can be used in large and small sizes on leaflets, banners and other materials. To submit your logo, email cyclon@tbn.ca, with the subject heading "Cyclon logo contest." Contest closes Monday, February 29, 2016.

This year's Cyclon takes place in beautiful Kingston over the August long weekend.

Canada by bike

Come listen to TBN member Paul Stockton as he reads from his book On The Detour: Cycling Across Canada on a Recumbent. Paul will share photos and stories of the despair of constant rain, the pain of injury, encounters with animals, and meetings with some of the friendliest people in Canada.

Paul will speak on March 2 at Northern District Library in Toronto. Please register ahead of time so we know how many people to expect.

Test ride the Milton Velodrome

You've seen pictures of the daredevil cyclists spinning round the track at the Milton Velodrome. Now we're offering you a chance to try it for yourself. Click here to register for this special two-hour session on March 13. The $61 member-only registration fee includes instruction, bike rental and taxes, as well as this amazing chance to experience the sensation of 42-degree banked bends!. Capacity is limited so sign up now.

Visit TBN at the Toronto Bike show

The Toronto International Bike Show opens on March 4 and runs right through the weekend, with displays from 150 manufacturers, retailers, travel companies and other bicycle focused exhibitors. Entry is $15, but you can save $2 by buying your ticket online ahead of time. And while you're there, please come by and say hi to the TBN volunteers at booth #463.

Ski Partners

With the cancellation of the TBN day ski program, we encourage you to check out other great ski clubs in the GTA. Both High Park Ski Club and Trakkers offer weekly ski day trips, and TBN members are welcome to join these clubs.

Lead a ride

TBN's annual ride leaders clinic is coming up on April 7. We encourage all ride leaders to register for this event, and welcome new leaders too. Check the website for details.

Deals, deals, deals

There are some great winter deals available at some of TBN's retail partners, and the off-season is always a good time to shop for bikes and accessories. Check out our partner stores and see what's available. If you have a favourite shop that's not on our list, tell the owner to contact publicity@tbn.ca to be added.

New discount partners include the epic charity ride, 7 Days in May, which raises money to find a cure for pancreas cancer, and which is offering TBN members a 10 percent discount on the registration fee. Options include a Single Day of Riding (May 28), a Weekend Ride (May 28-29), and the challenging Around the Lake Ride (May 28 – June 3). All rides require a minimum fundraising commitment, with 100% of proceeds going to NCIC Clinical Trials Group in Kingston.

Daily distances are long. The Around the Lake Ride would be classified as Advanced Tourist as the ride averages 150km per day at averages of 25-28kph.

Another charity offering TBN members a discount is the PWA Friends for Life Bike Rally, a 6 day journey from Toronto to Montreal. The funds raised through the Bike Rally enable Toronto People With AIDS Foundation (PWA) to provide critical services and support to individuals living with HIV/AIDS in Toronto. TBN members get 20% off when registering.

Discount codes for these two great charity rides can be found on the TBN Retailer & Services Directory.

Get your jersey

Sales of the very popular TBN cycling jerseys, jackets and vests continue, with a wide range of items available.

We need 10 orders to start a production run, and then it's about 5-7 weeks delivery, so you can have your new jersey this Spring.

Details here. (as of press time, sales are presently suspended while details are being updated)

REMINDERS

Housekeeping points

Winter is also a good time to update your profile on the TBN website to be sure you're up to date on the rides you typically do. Sometimes an important email is sent only to those people who checked a certain ride program box (eg news about a Saturday Morning Ride may be sent to those who check off that box). Log on to your account, click "view profile" at the top right of the screen, and edit away.

This is also where you can offer to volunteer. As you know, TBN relies on volunteers for all its activities. If you can help, please complete that section.

Remember to re-visit the TBN website before you head out in case your activity is cancelled on short notice. Coordinators will always put safety first and cancel a ride if weather conditions pose a danger.

You can also check the TBN schedule on your smartphone at www.tbn.ca/mobile.

You do not have to sign up for rides. Just show up at the start point and show your membership card to the ride leader.

Remember to visit the TBN calendar of events to find out more about what's coming up.
