February 18, 2024 New social eventsThe TBN Pub Quiz series is set for the third or fourth Thursday of each month at one of Toronto’s best and most interesting venues, the Prenup Pub. Participants will work together in teams of four of five to answer trivia questions in four categories to be chosen by the teams before the quiz begins. Virtually any category is possible – even cycling! There will be prizes for the winning team. Registration is now open for the first Pub Quiz on Feb. 22. Sign up soon as registration closes on Feb. 19. In other news, the club's inaugural Spring Fling, an annual party to open the cycling season, is scheduled for May 4. The evening will feature a buffet-style Middle-Eastern dinner and dancing to live music by The Junctioneers, one of the best cover bands in Toronto. For more information and to register for these events, go to the Social Events page. Gearing up for Cyclon 2024TBN cycling season is just around the corner and the Cyclon committee is hard at work planning for Cyclon 2024, which this year will be held Aug. 2-5 at Trent University in Peterborough. Trent has a beautiful campus situated on the lovely Otonabee River. Enjoy rides each day for all classifications, a Friday night reception, hosted Saturday night dinners and the Sunday night banquet and dance. Cyclon registration will open in mid-April. Stay tuned for more info. The Committee has also started looking for volunteers, so please let us know if you (or perhaps your non-cycling other half) would be interested in driving the SAG Wagon (rental van) on Saturday and/or Sunday of the Cyclon weekend. This volunteer will be compensated with one free night’s accommodation for each day driving. If you are interested and would like more details, please contact cyclon@tbn.ca. TBN's cycling routes: We need your inputDo you want to contribute to the club by creating routes, but don't know how? Are you a new Program Coordinator and need to know how to maintain your routes or add existing routes? Perhaps you have an idea for a TBN weekend trip with multiple rides throughout the weekend, and you want to put together a set of routes for this trip. If you fit any of these descriptions, then watch this TBN educational video on YouTube, containing a combination of presentation and live demo, using TBN's Club account in RideWithGPS.. The critical message of this video is that no one in TBN needs to pay for their own RideWithGPS account for TBN-related usage. TBN pays for a RideWithGPS club account, which grants our members the privileges of RideWithGPS "Premium" level. This includes TBN members who follow club routes, and also route creators/editors. Free CAN-BIKE Level 3/4 classes For TBN members - April 12-14
Andrew and Martin will be teaching the CAN-BIKE level 3/4 classes for TBN members. Do you want to boost your cycling skill level? Be a safer and more defensive rider on the road? Increase your confidence about riding on city streets? Whether you are a new or a long-term rider, there is always something to learn, some skills to improve, and, admit it, some bad habits to unlearn. Perhaps you are a TBN ride leader, but you are uncertain about what skills/behaviours to demonstrate and encourage as you lead your ride. Don't take our word for it. Hear what our graduates had to say about the July class:
CAN-BIKE provides structured classes to help you with all this and more! CAN-BIKE provides a Canada-wide skills curriculum as defined by Cycling Canada, and is recommended by provincial governments and many Canadian cities. For information on this TBN educational offering, see PROGRAMS/EDUCATION/CAN-BIKE LEV 3 / LEV 4 EDUCATION or https://www.tbn.ca/CAN-BIKE-Classes Joey Schwarz, Ken Lackman to new board positionsIn the weeks following last November's TBN Board meeting, which included confirmation of the new Board of Directors starting this year, the Board confirmed the appointment of two members to new positions for the coming two-year term. Joey Schwarz is the new Communications director. Joey has been a TBN member for over a decade and is a super-experienced long-distance cyclist with a background in information technology, cycling education and advocacy. Ken Lackman is the new Social Events director. Ken has been in English language teaching for more than 25 years, including a role as social director for various trips and other activities. As an active member of TBN since 2010, he has done well over a hundred rides with Urban Rollers and, more recently, some Tourist rides. New Tourist Ride coordinators for 2024Many thanks to Danny Harvey, who is departing as Tourist Ride program coordinator this year. We wish him the best with his new-found time to explore the wide world beyond TBN. The program will be run this year by Frank Piazza, Terry Walsh and Sam Bootsma. TBN is grateful to them for stepping up as volunteers. Members who are interested in participating in Tourist Rides this year, or trying out a ride, are asked to please complete this Survey. There is currently no closing date for this survey. However, we urge everyone to complete it as soon as possible as a closing date could be implemented in the coming weeks without warning RAGBRAI (Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa) July 20-27, 2024 TBN is hoping to organize a group to participate in RAGBRAI, an epic eight-day rolling festival of bicycles, music, food, camaraderie and community in Iowa, which was started in 1973 by two columnists at the Des Moines Register (hence the name). It is the oldest, largest and longest multi-day bicycle touring event in the world. For more info, check out ragbrai.com. If you are interested in participating, please email weekendtrips@tbn.ca. |
TBN is continuing with its winter program of virtual rides, using the Zwift computer platform to provide an almost limitless number of indoor rides while the weather remains cold, wet or snowy. We are currently scheduling morning rides on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. As well, we are hosting Tuesday and Thursday evening rides. Check the TBN Calendar for scheduled rides.
Zwift allows us to offer curated rides in two fantasy worlds: Watopia and a Japanese-themed Makuri Islands, as well as virtual routes in London, France, Innsbruck, Yorkshire, Richmond, Scotland and a futuristic New York City. There are more than 100 different routes, from gentle to extremely strenuous. Many of our rides will use the "rubber band" feature in Zwift to keep all participants close together.
If you are interested in Zwift rides, either as a participant or as a volunteer virtual ride leader, please email virtualrides@tbn.ca with your preferences (day, time, distance and duration) and whether you are willing to host an event. Details about upcoming Zwift meetups will be posted on the TBN website. For more information about the meetups and how to get started, see https://tbn.ca/zwiftmeetups.
Due to an issue we have discovered on Apple devices, we have had to revert to the original wording for the link used to cancel your reservation for an event. If you need to cancel your reservation for an event, see the Cancel-my-registration page for details.
Please remember to login to the TBN website prior to registering for our Events. If you are not logged in, the system does not know who you are, and will only offer you the Guest Rider registration choice. Also, when you are logged into the TBN website, a lot of members-only content appears.
