Key TBN Roles Available

Two crucial board positions fall vacant at the November 3 annual meeting, which means your club needs you, and it needs you now. If you've ever thought about volunteering to help TBN, now is the time to step forward.

President: Ian Rankin is retiring after three terms but will remain as past president for one year in line with the club's constitution.

Secretary: Bob Scott is retiring after two terms.

Plus we are looking for volunteers to join our social, education, technical and touring committees.

Please contact  Ian Rankin if you can help.

Dinner dance early bird pricing ends soon

You have just two weeks to get our fantastic $45 early bird pricing for TBN's annual meeting and dinner dance, which takes place on November 3 at Fantasy Farms on Pottery Road near Bayview. More details are available on the TBN website, but food includes both meat and vegan options, as well as a chocolate raspberry crepe. Early bird pricing expires on October 16.

Ride the Velodrome

Sign up now for our exciting change to ride the Milton Velodrome, with a no-brakes, fixed gear bike that spins you round the steep, banked circuit. The $65 session takes place on Sunday October 14, and the price includes detailed instructions, plus rental bikes. Check out the website for more details.

Seven members are signed, just three more needed for the event to go ahead, so don't delay.

Wolf Den in the winter

Registration is open now for our excursion to the winter wonderland of the rustic Wolf Den lodge, on the edge of Algonquin Park. The Feb 8-10 trip costs $105 for members, or $115 for non members, and activities include snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Check the website for details of the trip.

Member of the month: David Middleton

David Middleton is TBN's September member of the month. David, who joined TBN in 1985, is responsible for the successful Sunday Urban Roller rides, routes that he has upgraded and tweaked over the years. He recruits ride leaders and sweeps when needed, and is often the first to help when riders run into mechanical problems, David programs Ride with GPS maps for the Urban Roller adventures, and keeps the cue sheets current. But he doesn't actually have a GPS device, preferring to rely on his knowledge of Toronto's streets and trails. If you see David on a ride, please thank him for his contribution and congratulate him on being September's Member of the Month.

Safety tip: Changing a tire

If you ride enough you will inevitably get a flat tire. You should always carry a spare tube and basic tools to change your time, and you should know what you need to do. TBN often offers sessions on changing tires or you can watch this video for tips. Bicycle shops like Mountain Equipment Coop also offer sessions on changing a tire.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you are well off to the side of the road before you start working on your bike.

Check out the home page for a collection of weekly safety tips.
