Hello Everyone,
From May to September 2025, I did a self-supported bicycle tour following several of popular long distance Eurovelo routes in Europe.
Amsterdam to Vienna: Eurovelo 19 and 15 along the Meuse and Rhin rivers and Eurovelo 6 along the Danube.
Vienna to Budapest: Eurovelo 6 along the Danube River
Prague-Berlin-Copenhagen-Helsingor along the Eurovelo 7
Sweden, I rode the Kattegattleden route, also part of the Eurovelo 7, from Helsingborg to Göteborg.
I took a train and ferry from Göteborg to Travemünde, Germany and a second train to Salzburg, Austria to ride the Alpe Adria route from Salzburg to Grado, Italy and continuing to Slovenia where I ended my ride at the end of September.
All the Eurovelo routes in Europe are very well signed and you don’t really need a GPS unit for navigation. But if you want to follow directions on your Garmin, you can use the cycle.travel app to create the route and upload the GPX files to your Garmin. The cycle.travel app also shows where the hotels, campgrounds, parks and restaurants are along the route.
November and December 2025, I rode my bike from Burgos to Seville following the Camino de Santiago Francės and Ruta Via de la Plata, also part of the Camino of Santiago network of pilgrimage routes in Spain. Both pilgrimage routes are incorporated within the long distance Eurovelo 3 and Eurovelo 1 cycling routes
The Camino de Santiago and Ruta Via de la Plata are very popular pilgrimage routes where accommodation and food are easy to find in Albergues which are budget friendly accommodations primarily for pilgrims walking (or riding bikes) the Camino de Santiago. I also stayed in family run hotels whenever the local Albergue was closed for the season or the guide indicated it did not have heat.
If route planning and carrying all your stuff on the bike is not your thing, look at the self guided tours offered by my friends at Rutas Pangea www.rutaspangea.com, a cycle touring company based in Madrid, Spain.
For 2026, Rutas Pangea is offering a variety of unique routes ranging from 7 to 14 days in France, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Greece, Austria, Hungary, Slovenia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Portugal, Ireland, the UK and Spain. Rutas Pangea also offers fully supported tours in Spain and Rwanda.
I am happy to share more information about my self-supported tour to help you plan yours in 2026.
