July 16 2024 Cyclon is almost here!
Cyclon, TBN's four-day premier cycle touring event, is now sold out. The gathering is set for the Civic Holiday weekend, Aug. 2-5, at Trent University in Peterborough, Ont. (campus pictured below). If you haven't registered yet but you are interested in joining us in Peterborough, we encourage you to join the waitlist as we may possibly have more spots opening up in the near future. For more information and to have your name added to the waitlist, click here. Trent University campus |
Dancing on the Danforth, July 20. This will be a very special evening as it will feature the band that will be playing at the TBN AGM in November. The Tim Bovaconti Band might be the best cover band in the GTA. Come find out for yourself at Noonan’s Irish Pub. There is NO COVER. Dancing is optional, but this band gets people out of their seats with the first song. More information, music videos, and registration can be found here.
TBN Pub Quiz, July 25. The TBN Pub Quiz series continues on the third or fourth Thursday of each month at one of Toronto’s best and most interesting venues, the Prenup Pub. Registration for the July 25 event is now open via the calendar. More details about the Pub Quiz series are available here.
TBN Picnic Lunch, August 11. Registration is now open for our annual picnic at Milliken Park (pictured below). This year, when registering, you can choose one of four gourmet sandwiches. Note that the deadline to sign up is Aug. 6. More information and registration can be found here. We still need a number of volunteers to set up the food and clean up afterward. If you are interested in volunteering, email social@tbn.ca.
Three days in Orillia, Aug. 13-15. Members are set to gather in this beautiful Muskoka town on Lake Couchiching for a follow-up to last year's fun-filled trip. Accommodations are available at Lakehead University Residence and Conference Centre, where breakfast will be served on Day 2 and Day 3. The rides range from a 41 km jaunt around town and along the area's great trail system on Day 1, to a 108 km loop that travels through some picturesque sites in cottage country, including Bass Lake, the lock system in Port Severn, and the Big Chute Marine Railway on Day 2. Day 3 features a gentler ride along Lake Simcoe. For more details, and to register, visit the TBN calendar.
Labour Day tour of Brant County, Aug. 31-Sept. 2. TBN Touring director Dennis Szilvasy is organizing a weekend trip to Brant County. The group will stay in the area for two nights, at a cost of $160 (for the combined two nights) for shared accommodation, including continental breakfast. There is an option to book the hotel directly to stay the night of Aug. 30 as well, if desired. Registration opens July 20 and closes Aug. 1. Those with questions are asked to email Dennis at touring@tbn.ca.
CAN-BIKE classes set for August. Andrew Paterson and Fred Yagi will be teaching CAN-BIKE level 3 (Core Cycling Skills) and level 4 (Advanced Cycling Skills) classes for TBN members. Do you want to boost your cycling skill level? Be a safer and more defensive rider on the road? Whether you are a novice or a long-time rider, there is always something to learn, some skills to improve, and, admit it, some bad habits to unlearn. Note that anyone can take the Aug. 16 CAN-BIKE TBN Zoom session but you will not get a CAN-BIKE certificate for taking part only in the online session. For the certificate, the entire weekend program must be completed. There are a maximum of 12 spots available for the in-person sessions. Once they are filled, others will be placed on a waiting list.
TBN has three new CAN-BIKE Instructors. Congratulations to TBN members Fred Yagi, Bertha Hughes and Nik Efimov, who completed a 4-day CAN-BIKE level 5 course, which certifies them as CAN-BIKE Instructors. They will be offering TBN members CAN-BIKE level 3 and level 4 courses for TBN members in the coming months. They join the existing TBN CAN-BIKE instructors Andrew Paterson and Martin Lansche.
Ride with GPS educational event for TBN members, July 30. Heard a lot about Ride with GPS, but not sure how to use it or how to get the best out of it? Worry about getting lost on a TBN ride? Just in time for Cyclon, we have scheduled an online zoom educational event showing you how to get the most out of Ride with GPS, including how to download maps and navigate while on your bike. It will be led by Martin Lansche, TBN Technical director. For those who can’t make it, a recording of a previous presentation is available. We also have instructions on how to join the TBN Ride with GPS club account.
Two charity rides in support of the Brain Injury Society of Toronto are coming up this fall. For anyone interested, more information on both of these rides can be found in the TBN General Forum.
Tanya's Ride: Sept. 7, starting at 9 am in Albion Hills Park. There is an 80 km gravel route and a 75 km road route. Email Keith Luder at kvluder@gmail.com.
BIST Heroes Run, Walk, Roll or Bike Event: Sept. 29, starting at 8 am in Wilket Creek Park. This is a family-oriented ride with routes of 15/35 and 75 km.
Please ensure to periodically update your TBN club profile. Perhaps upload a photo of yourself (so other members know who you are), confirm that your email address listed is correct (as this is the primary way for us to contact you), confirm your phone and emergency contacts are still valid, and update your current (or former) occupation and let us know if and how you would like to volunteer with TBN. We are always looking for helping hands, especially those with needed skills. How to do this: Login to the website www.tbn.ca, click on your name, then click Edit Profile. When you are done, press Save to commit your changes.
Please be considerate of your fellow club members. We are seeing daily occurrences of members who have registered, but are not showing up for a ride. If you have registered for a club event, and you cannot attend, or you choose not to attend, please cancel your registration. For events where there are limited spaces, you are opening up your spot for someone else who might be on the event's waitlist. At the very least, it informs the ride leader not to expect you at the start. If you are unsure how to cancel your registration, see the Cancel-my-registration page for details.
Please remember to login to the TBN website prior to registering for our Events. If you are not logged in, the system does not know who you are, and will only offer you the Guest Rider registration choice. Also, when you are logged into the TBN website, a lot of members-only content appears.
