Joey Schwarz, Ken Lackman to new board positions

In the weeks following last November's TBN Board meeting, which included confirmation of the new Board of Directors starting this year, the Board confirmed the appointment of two members to new positions for the coming two-year term.

Joey Schwarz is the new Communications director. Joey has been a TBN member for over a decade and is a super-experienced long-distance cyclist with a background in information technology, cycling education and advocacy.

Ken Lackman is the new Social Events director. Ken has been in English language teaching for more than 25 years, including a role as social director for various trips and other activities. As an active member of TBN since 2010, he has done well over a hundred rides with Urban Rollers and, more recently, some Tourist rides.

TBN names 2023 volunteers of the year

TBN has honoured three dedicated members as volunteers of the year, all pictured below. Catherine Whitfield did a lot of especially welcome work with the Tourist Ride program; Dave Middleton was a super volunteer in the Urban Roller program, leading numerous rides throughout the city; and Carl Condon has been a busy organizer with the Wednesday Wheelies team for several years. Each person received a gift card from TBN. We cannot express how pleased we are to recognize their volunteer work in the club.

New Tourist Ride coordinators for 2024

Danny Harvey is departing as Tourist Ride program coordinator this year, and we wish him the best with his new-found time to explore the wide world beyond TBN. The program will be run this year by Terry Walsh and Sam Bootsma, who have both been around the club for many years. Many thanks to them for stepping up as volunteers.

TBN will be going to Camp Wanakita on Koshlong Lake, near Haliburton, Feb. 23-25. Activities will include Cross country skiing, tobogganing, night walks on the lake, guided stretching, ropes course and more. Jan. 26 is the deadline to register, online via the TBN calendar.

RAGBRAI (Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa)

July 20-27, 2024

TBN is hoping to organize a group to participate in RAGBRAI, an epic eight-day rolling festival of bicycles, music, food, camaraderie and community in Iowa, which was started in 1973 by two columnists at the Des Moines Register (hence the name). It is the oldest, largest and longest multi-day bicycle touring event in the world. For more info, check out ragbrai.comIf you are interested in participating, please email weekendtrips@tbn.ca.

Zwift your way to winter fitness

TBN is continuing with its winter program of virtual rides, using the Zwift computer platform to provide an almost limitless number of indoor rides while the weather remains cold, wet or snowy. We are currently scheduling morning rides on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. As well, we are hosting Tuesday and Thursday evening rides. Check the TBN Calendar for scheduled rides.

Zwift allows us to offer curated rides in two fantasy worlds: Watopia and a Japanese-themed Makuri Islands, as well as virtual routes in London, France, Innsbruck, Yorkshire, Richmond, Scotland and a futuristic New York City. There are more than 100 different routes, from gentle to extremely strenuous. Many of our rides will use the "rubber band" feature in Zwift to keep all participants close together.

If you are interested in Zwift rides, either as a participant or as a volunteer virtual ride leader, please email virtualrides@tbn.ca with your preferences (day, time, distance and duration) and whether you are willing to host an event. Details about upcoming Zwift meetups will be posted on the TBN website. For more information about the meetups and how to get started, see https://tbn.ca/zwiftmeetups.

How to cancel a reservation for an event

Due to an issue we have discovered on Apple devices, we have had to revert to the original wording for the link used to cancel your reservation for an event. If you need to cancel your reservation for an event, see the Cancel-my-registration page for details.

Event registration reminder

Please remember to login to the TBN website prior to registering for our Events. If you are not logged in, the system does not know who you are, and will only offer you the Guest Rider registration choice. Also, when you are logged into the TBN website, a lot of members-only content appears.
