Sunday Tourist Ride Restart

The Sunday Tourist Rides have been dying a slow death for some time now, and this year they finally kicked the bucket.

The purpose of this note is to gauge member interest in restarting these rides.  To this end, the following presents a concept for how the future rides might operate.  This is followed by a short series of questions seeking your feedback and improvement suggestions.

Please help your club by reading the material and responding to the questions.

Concept

Sunday Tourist Rides are for those members who want to go further and faster than the other TBN ride categories and who do not want to drive to remote start locations.  Accordingly:

  • The start location will be the Finch subway parking lot as this is reasonably central and easily reached by subway, car and even (for some) bicycle.  Other start locations could be added later if there is sufficient interest.
  • There will be two ride groups, Tourist A and Tourist B.
  • Tourist A rides will be faster and longer than Tourist B rides.  Tourist A rides will have occasional regrouping; however, the group may not always wait for those who can’t keep up.
  • Tourist B rides will be slower and shorter than Tourist A rides.  Tourist B rides will be “no drop”, meaning the intention is that no-one gets left behind to ride on their own.
  • Tourist A rides will ideally be 80 km to 110 km long and travel at whatever speed the riders wish.  That said, if 32+ kph (assuming flat terrain and no wind) is not for you, you may want to join the other group.
  • Tourist B rides will ideally be 70 km to 90 km long, and also travel at whatever speed the riders wish while simultaneously respecting the “no drop” nature of the ride.  Minimum speed is therefore expected to be about 22 kph, with overall speeds likely to be somewhat higher than the Urban Roller rides, but not significantly so.
  • There will initially be about four different main routes, ideally with a common lunch stop.  Additionally, each Holiday Monday will have the traditional ride to Unionville with the lunch stop at “Jakes”.
  • Proposed start times are 9:30 AM for Tourist A and 10:00 AM for Tourist B.  The staggered start is to allow for both groups to meet at the common lunch stop.
  • A weekly email will be sent to all self-identified tourist riders containing information on the routes and links to GPS maps.  Paper maps will not be provided at the start of the ride but should be available from the Ride With GPS website.

Please click/tap on the "Register" button. This will take you a questionnaire where you can provide your input and suggestions for improvement.
