Wolf Den winter - Skiing & Snowshoeing weekend getaway

Last weekend of January

Stay at the rustic Wolf Den Bunkhouse ‘n Cabins close to the entrance of Algonquin Park from Friday evening until Sunday.  The hostel is approximately a three hour drive north of Toronto, on Highways 400, 11, and 60.  The closest major urban center is Huntsville on Hwy 60.  Visit www.wolfdenbunkhouse.com for more information about the Hostel.

Enjoy the company of fellow enthusiasts while reveling in and celebrating winter.  Provided will be Friday night snacks. You have to organise your own Friday dinner, 2 breakfasts, and lunches. Saturday evening will be a pot luck (group) dinner.

We have the entire hostel booked for the weekend.  There are three buildings.  The Main Lodge building has washrooms, showers, cooking, and eating facilities as well as bedrooms down stairs.  There are two split winterized cabins (Loon and Bear) with 3 beds or 4 beds in each section.  The Loon and Bear cabins do not have washrooms or running water.  You must go to the Main Lodge for washrooms and showers.

You can choose a bed for yourself and your friends when signing up. See the event registration page for details, and to see the current assignment of beds.

Algonquin Park has four trail networks specifically designed and reserved for cross-country or Nordic skiing. Three trails are packed and groomed on a regular basis and there is one wilderness ski trail, where no grooming takes place:

  • Fen Lake Ski Trail
  • Leaf Lake Ski Trail
  • Old Railway Trail
  • Minnesing Wilderness Ski Trail (not groomed)

Arrowhead Provincial Park is also close by as is the Leslie Frost Centre Trails.  The Blue Spruce Motel has groomed trails as well - it's 1km from the Hostel.

For snowshoeing in Algonquin Park, any of the Hwy 60 corridor hiking trails can be used in winter.  The 5km Booth Rock trail becomes 7km in winter as the road is not plowed and the 10km Centennial Trail becomes 14km in winter.

Please register online.  You can pay by PayPal or e-transfer.  If you must pay by cheque, download the Sign Up Sheet below.

Suggestions on what to bring for the weekend:

  • Potluck Dinner - Saturday night dinner is a group effort, bring a dish you wish to share.
  • BYOB - alcohol is welcome if you are so inclined.
  • Food for your Friday meal, 2 breakfasts and lunches.
  • Bathing suit - there is a sauna cabin.
  • Skis, perhaps snow shoes, boots, and appropriate clothing
  • Slippers - take off your boots before entering the main cabin

What not to bring:

  • Water – the hostel suggests using their “beautiful UV filtered water”
  • Plates, cups, and cutlery – the hostel has everything you need.
  • Bedding, pillows, linens, comforters, and towels – these are provided by the Hostel.
