As cyclists, we all share a responsibility to make every ride as safe and enjoyable as possible. In recent weeks, several cyclists in our community have been injured while riding, including both TBN members and non-TBN riders, some resulting in serious injuries and lengthy recoveries. While every collision and crash has its own circumstances, these events serve as a sobering reminder that cycling carries risks, and that safety must remain our highest priority.
TBN requires that all riders wear a helmet and have the right equipment. Whether you are a new member or a seasoned rider, there is always something new to learn about riding safely in groups, navigating traffic, and responding to changing road conditions. Communicate with one another. Be sure to use clear and timely hand signals and verbal warnings to help everyone anticipate hazards, turns, stops and changes in pace. Also, be patient with one another and with motorists and pedestrians. Check out our "Tips" page for some valuable info.
By continuing to learn and look out for one another, we can help ensure that every rider returns home safely. Ride smart.

On May 31, TBN participated in the Bike For Brain Health ride; 60 members were volunteer ride marshals, watching out for riders in trouble and helping keep others out of trouble! Organizing those marshals was a huge logistical task done by volunteers. Special thanks to Terry Walsh and Ed Ravin for making sure everyone knew where they needed to be on this epic day. In addition, 22 TBN'ers made up the new TBN Bike for Brain Health fundraising team that raised more than $16,000 towards a very important cause. It was a great day out there on the Gardiner and the DVP, and a ride unlike any other in the city. Hope to see you next year!

TBN August 9 Picnic Cancelled
We regret to inform members that the board has decided to cancel this year’s TBN summer picnic. The vote to cancel was nearly unanimous. There are a number of reasons why this decision was reached. We have two similar events during the season: the Season Kickoff Breakfast and the Picnic Lunch. The board feels the Kickoff is invaluable as, after a long winter, it allows members to get reacquainted and meet new and potential members. While the Kickoff occurs after many months without a major TBN social event, the Picnic happens just a week after what is, arguably, the best social event of the year: Cyclon. More info on the decision to cancel can be found by clicking here. In their discussion, the board members all agreed that a big mid-winter social event would be a great way to break up the time between the AGM and the Kickoff. We already have some interesting ideas for that event and would welcome more from our members. Should the switch of funding from the Picnic Lunch to the mid-winter event prove unpopular with many members, we can always resurrect the picnic next year. Your comments and suggestions are most welcome and can be sent to social@tbn.ca.

New this season: special regrouping rides. TBN has designated certain Tourist Class rides as "regrouping," meaning there will be an extra ride leader who will stop at points during the ride to allow slower riders who ride at an Urban Roller pace to catch up before continuing. These rides are great for those newer to riding in the country. Upcoming rides of this type: June 28, July 1, July 17 and July 19. Details will be on the individual ride event pages and shown on the calendar. Questions? Info@tbn.ca.

Program Profile Overnight Trips: Bikepacking
|
Bikepacking is riding your bike, on some non-paved surfaces such as rail trails, single track and gravel roads, over multiple days, totally self-supported but in our case, with a group. Distances covered will generally be in the range of 90-140 km per day, at average speeds of 15-20 kph. These are no-drop rides: Riders will start, ride and finish together as a group.
Practically any bike can be used for bikepacking: with full suspension, hardtail, or fully rigid, flat or drop bars, tires ideally with a minimum width of about 38 mm and some tread, and usually gears that will help you get your loaded bike (with clothing, snacks and possibly camping gear) up hills.
Watch for trips posted on the Calendar. If you have any Bikepacking questions or trip ideas, contact Greg Andre-Barrett at overnighttrips@tbn.ca.

This year's trips include rides of all lengths, on all surfaces (rail trails, gravel roads, paved roads), all types of accommodations (hotels, residences, camping) and experiences (wineries, breweries, cafes, restaurants, falls big and small). Some trips require bikepacking, some do not. Each link will take you to the event page for details on a specific trip.
